Subject : L'l Abner
"Based on the characters created by Al Capp"

Original Musical Comedy by Norman Panama and Melvin Frank

Directed by Robert Weinstein

Music Director Justin Ryan

Legendary cartoonist, Al Capp’s world famous characters come to life in this Broadway musical full of hillbilly nonsense and sharp political criticism which might come straight from today’s headlines.

The motley and lovable characters of Dogpatch, USA, including Ma and Pa Yokum, Li’l Abner with his bombshell girlfriend Daisy Mae, Marryin’ Sam and the homely Scragg family, are enjoying a lazy day at the fishin’ hole when a town meeting is called by Senator Jack S. Phogbound.  The Senator announces that Dogpatch has been declare the most unnecessary place in the whole country, making it the perfect town for testing an atomic bomb.  Dogpatch is to be evacuated.

This touches off a chain of events in an attempt to save the beloved town and the next Sadie Hawkins Dance race when the females chase the men in order to catch them in the net of matrimony.  The race where Daisy Mae hopes to finally catch her Li’l Abner. The search for the thing that will make the town “necessary” takes the story from the discovery of Yokumberry tonic to the bureaucracy of Washington, DC, with its politicians and scientists then back to Dogpatch where the answer to the problems has been all along.

The songs from the show include the gentle duet, “Namely You,” the hilarious showstopper “Jubilation T. Cornpone, General Bullmoose’s “Progress is the Root of All Evil” and the political satire, “The Country’s in the Very Best of Hands.”

Performances will be held at the Jersey Shore Arts Center, Main St. and Main Ave. Ocean Grove, New Jersey on NOVEMBER 13, 14, 20, 21, at 8 PM.  On Sunday, November 22, 2009 the show will be at 3 PM

Tickets are $20.  For reservations call 732-502-0153.
